Disease Modifying Therapies (DMT’s)
For the first time, Australians can access disease-modifying treatments for Alzheimer’s disease—marking a historic shift in dementia care.
The recently approved therapies donanemab and lecanemab represent a major breakthrough. Unlike previous treatments that only managed symptoms like memory loss, these new monoclonal antibody therapies actually slow disease progression by targeting amyloid buildup in the brain.
While further research is needed to unlock a cure for Alzheimer’s, these new treatments that slow disease progression are the most significant treatment breakthrough in decades and herald a new era of early diagnosis and targeted intervention
What This Means for Patients
The Australian Dementia Network (ADNeT) was instrumental in bringing these treatments to Australia and ensuring our health system is ready. ADNeT has also expanded its Clinical Quality Registry to monitor the real-world safety and effectiveness of these medications.
