For decades, treatments for Alzheimer’s disease could only help manage symptoms such as memory loss and confusion — they could not slow the disease itself.
That began to change in Australia in 2025 with the approval of the first “disease-modifying” Alzheimer’s treatments, marking a major milestone in dementia research and care.
These new anti-amyloid monoclonal antibody therapies (mAbs), including the recently approved donanemab and lecanemab, target the protein amyloid in the brain to slow the progression of the disease.
While these treatments are not a cure, they represent the beginning of a new era in dementia – one focused on early diagnosis and targeted treatment.
These mAbs are the first generation of these treatments for Alzheimer’s disease, with 192 active clinical trials currently underway worldwide.

Please note, treatment is primarily designed for adults aged 65+ experiencing mild to moderate symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. You will need to consult with your GP for assessment of eligibility for treatment.
ADNeT and DMTs
The Australian Dementia Network played an important role in advocating for the arrival and implementation of disease-modifying therapies for Alzheimer’s disease, including lecanemab and donanemab, and ensuring our health system was ready.
ADNeT has led work advocating for the regulatory approval for these new therapies and building the clinical, research and diagnostic infrastructure needed to support safe and equitable access to these therapies in Australia.
The ADNeT Clinical Quality Registry has also expanded to include clinical monitoring of DMTs, to inform about the real world safety and benefits of these new medications and monitor the safety and efficacy of these treatments.
Australia now has an opportunity to embark on a transformative change in dementia treatment, toward precision diagnostics and disease-modifying treatment pathways to improve health outcomes for future generations, as well as delivering better care for people living with dementia today.
To do this, we also need to invest in research and clinical trial capabilities, to ensure that Australians can be among the first in the world to access the latest innovations in dementia diagnosis and treatment.
