WEBINAR- Dementia and Social Cognition

When: March 21, 2024
             4:00pm (AEST)

Part 1: Social cognition and dementia: Warning signs and interventions

Our ability to stay connected to others is key to our well-being. With ageing, we experience changes in our social cognitive abilities. These abilities decline further in people living with dementia. Dr Suraj Samtani is a Dementia Australia Research Foundation Fellow studying social cognitive changes in dementia. His talk will feature the latest research on identifying the early warning signs of social cognitive deficits, screening tools for patients, and discuss novel interventions for social cognitive skills for older adults with cognitive impairments.

Webinar Objectives:

  • Describe social cognition
  • Highlight changes in social cognition with ageing and dementia
  • Outline how to screen for social cognitive deficits in patients
  • Discuss interventions for social cognitive skills

Part 2: Social determinants of health in ageing and dementia – an overview of current research direction

Social determinants of health (SDOH) are the “conditions in the environments where people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, seek health care, and age.” SDOH are shaped by social policies, economics and politics, and contribute to inequities and health disparities. The WHO recognises the critical influence of SDOH on ageing and dementia and calls for a multi-dimensional approach to foster healthy ageing. This presentation by Dr Simone Reppermund will give an overview of current research on SDOH in ageing and dementia.

Webinar Objectives:

  • Outline different social determinants of health in ageing and dementia
  • Summarise recent international research on social determinants of health in ageing and dementia
